Review: FishBar (Manhattan Beach)

I mean, need I say more about why we went to FishBar last night?…
Lobster Night!
So here’s the dumb thing…we didn’t even get the Whole Maine Lobster. 🤦🏻‍♀️ The dinner started off pretty well with a very friendly mustachioed server! We squeaked in right before happy hour ended and I got an uncharacteristic glass of Chardonnay…you know, because I’m having seafood…but let’s be honest, I have only 1 determining factor when it comes to alcohol – does it taste good or not? It could be garbage booze and as long as it tasted good to me, I wouldn’t know the difference of whether or not it paired well with the food. My boyfriend got a marg like the lady he is.

Our server took one look at me and was probably like, “oh yeah, she eats carbs” and offered up some tasty sourdough bread.
Sourdough and butta!
The best thing about it is that the bread was warm and the butter soft. I hate cold bread and cold butter. At a minimum, it has to be one or the other. I do wish the outside were a bit crustier but now I’m just nit picking about free food. We also jammed in some happy hour eats with buffalo shrimp and pancetta mac and cheese. Both were totally bomb and came out super quick…to the point where I think they gave us someone else’s designated plates! Luckily, we dug in asapp, so, no take backs. The buffalo shrimp was served with chunky blue cheese and the pancetta mac and cheese was a truffle mac and cheese! The menu never mentioned that! I don’t care if that makes me #basic! I love truffles! After the stellar apps, we were very much looking forward to the rest of the meal! Unfortunately, this is where it started to go down a bit… Next up was our oysters rockefeller. I didn’t used to be a fan of these because my only experience were the super creamy rich ones. However, lately, they’ve been more akin to grilled oysters where it’s nicely charbroiled on top…these were not those. These were back to being the super creamy kind. It’s a textural thing for me! You’ve got the soft, slimy oyster and goopy cream….ugh. We each had 2 and couldn’t bring ourselves to finish the rest. Looks pretty though…
Oysters Rockefeller. #Nope
After that is when we made our fatal mistake…my boyfriend got the lobster dynamite. Sigh. He wanted to try something “different’. There were so many things wrong with this dish. First, we had to send back the original iteration as it was semi-cold, barely lukewarm. Second, it was basically fried lobster in a sweet eel sauce with giant dollops of cream cheese. Third, the lobster was barely there. So, a bite might consist of a tiny piece of lobster or more likely, a giant spoonful of cream cheese…by itself.
Luckily, I did not make the same mistake and I had opted to go with the simple, steamed Alaskan King crab legs with a #basic baked potato and some “healthy” sauteed spinach. I’m not exaggerating when I say the spinach was the best part. That’s not to say my meal wasn’t good; it was. But the spinach was so nicely and aggressively salted that my salty palate was more than satisfied. The baked potato was whatever (and kind of chintzy small, if you ask me!). Now, my favorite kind of crab is the Alaskan King crab…if not for anything else but the pure efficiency of how much meat you get relative to the effort it takes to shell it. However, I think they over steamed my legs. (That is a very weird statement.) The meat was a bit stringy…
Stringy Legs
I’m not going to lie though. I ate all the crab meat. I sure did. I would say, definitely go for happy hour and all of their weekly specials (Wednesday night is crab night!) as well as the excellent service! But maybe stick to the apps and the simpler preparations on the entrees.
